US to levy nearly 700% high import duty on Chinese steel pipes

The U.S. Department of Commerce will impose an amazingly high import duty of about 700% on major Chinese steel pipe producers, according to sources. In response to "unfair pricing practices" of Chinese steel pipe makers, the department decided to set a maximum of 615.92% anti-subsidy duty and an 85.55% anti-dumping duty on major Chinese steel pipe producers, including Tianjin Shuangjie Group, Jiangsu Yulong Steel Pipe Co, Weifang East Steel Pipe Co, etc., the regulator said in a statement released on Friday.
However, the decision will only be effective if the U.S. International Trade Commission rules that U.S. steel pipe producers really suffered import hurts from Chinese counterparts. The rules are expected to be published around Jul. 14.
China has cut export tax rebates on steel products several times and do not give subsidies to domestic steel exports, said Qi Xiangdong, a top official of China’s Iron and Steel Association.

If the U. S. Department of Commerce rulings result in final duties then American steel pipe and tube manufactures such as Wheatland Tube and Sharon Tube will begin to compete against pipe producers in China and NOT the Chinese government.
