May 21, 2009 (China Knowledge) – China will seek to develop agriculture through series of new measures, said Hui Liangyu, Chinese vice premier, at a two-day conference on comprehensive national agricultural development.
Hui said the nation should enhance agricultural production capacity and arrange more funding for the construction of farmlands and major grain bases that can be held to higher standards, which will increase earnings for farmers and help maintain stable economic development.
Agricultural development plays an important role in enriching the lives of rural residents, developing rural farmlands, bolstering agricultural infrastructure construction, and enhancing productivity and modernization, Hui said.
Hui also said the relevant government department should take some responsibility for developing the industry and science of agriculture and should protect and improve the ecological agricultural environment.
Eight provinces, including Jiangxi Province, Hebei Province, Heilongjiang Province and Jiangsu Province, exchanged opinions at the conference, which was also attended by representatives of 13 grain production bases.
