BRUSSELS –The European Union has started talks with Switzerland aimed at freeing up trade in farm produce, the E.U.’s executive commission said Tuesday.
The negotiations will aim to end tariffs on all agricultural produce sold between the two regions, as well as increase cooperation on food and feed safety.
In 2007, the E.U. sold EUR4.7 billion, or 7%, of its farm produce to Switzerland, while Switzerland sold EUR2.7 billion, or 70% of its produce to the E.U.

The development of featured agricultural industry in Dongan County has contributed to local agricultural growth and farmer’s income.
Dongan County has attached great importance to the development of featured agricultural industry, such as ginkgo, citrus, flowers, and Dongan chicken in recent years. From January to September this year, the total income of farmers has increased by 132 million Yuan.
In recent years, Dongan County opened nearly 20 training sessions free of charge on featured agricultural industry for 150,000 farmers. About 4,000 farmers have been granted the qualification certificates. More than 20 professional co-operation organizations, such as the Dongan Chicken organization have been set up to provide guidance in scale operation and other related aspects for farmers. The trade and industry department in Dongan County has successfully helped farmers and agriculture-related enterprises register more than 30 trademarks, be granted one provincial famous trademark, 7 municipally well-known trademarks and develop more than 600 agents of various agricultural products. At present, about 127 villages of featured agricultural industry have been set up, making up large scale bases of featured agricultural industry in Dongan.

Oct. 22, (Xinhua) — A China-aided agricultural technology center broke ground in Togo on Wednesday, aimed at strengthening bilateral cooperation in agricultural fields.

Chinese Ambassador to Togo Yang Min, Vice Governor of China’s Jiangxi Province Xiong Shengwen and other officials of both countries attended the ceremony.
Yang highlighted the boost of the Sino-Togo cooperation since the Beijing summit of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation in 2006.
Stressing the importance of cooperation in agriculture, the Chinese ambassador said the two sides will fully implement cooperation programs reached within the framework of the forum and take further steps to deepen bilateral relations in all fields.
The fruitful cooperation will contribute to the development of Togo’s agriculture and the strengthening of its food safety, he added.
Togolese Agriculture Minister Kossi Messan Ewovor praised Sino-Togo cooperation in agriculture.
“It is helpful for Togo to tackle challenges posed by food crises,” he said.
The center, consisting of a 10-hectare agricultural technology demonstration land and a 80-hectare rice cultivation base, would be constructed by China’s Jiangxi Huachang infrastructure engineering company.
The project will be completed before the end of 2009.
