LIMA, Sept. 23 (Xinhua) — Peru’s national tennis team won through on Sunday to the Davis Cup World Group for the first time ever, after reaching an unassailable 3-1 lead over Belarus on the clay courts of the Rinconda Country Club, in the La Molina suburb of Peru capital Lima.
Peru’s number one racket, Luis Horna, won the decisive point by defeating his counterpart Max Mirnyi 6-4, 7-5, 4-6 and 7-6 (4) in a grueling four-hour duel.
Peru had begun the day 2-1 up after Ivan Miranda defeated Mirnyi and Horna defeated Vladimir Voltchkov in Friday singles matches. Mirnyi and Voltchkov had defeated Miranda and Matias Silva in Saturday’s doubles matches.
There is one singles match left to play, but Peru’s team, captained by Jaime Yzaga, has already sealed entry to the World Group of the Cup.
