Handball: Angola women’s team strives for semifinals

(BEIJING, January 13) — The women’s handball teams of Angola, Congo, Cote d’Ivoire and Tunisia entered the semifinals of the African Handball Tournament on the morning of January 13, 2008. The tournament is also the qualification competition for the Beijing Olympic Games, with the champion earning a ticket to the Olympics.

In Group A, host country Angola cruised over Gabon 33-9. The Angola women’s team was the only African team to enter the quarter-finals in last year’s handball world championships. In this tournament, they showcased their capacity as a powerhouse with three straight victories.

Gabon suffered three defeats and ranked last. In the other match of Group A, Congo overpowered Algeria 28-25, scoring its second victory and qualifying for the semifinals. Algeria had only one victory.

In Group B, Tunisia beat DR Congo 40-25 and entered the semifinals with two ties and one victory, ranking second. DR Congo suffered three defeats. Cote d’Ivoire beat Cameroon and scored a second victory, qualifying for the semifinals as the no. 1 team.

All the women’s teams to compete in the semifinals of the African tournament have been determined. They will compete for the only ticket for the Olympic Games.
