Beijing Olympic Games

(BEIJING, June 20)– Defending men’s champions Hungary been drawn apart from current World Champions Croatia as the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games water polo schedule has been released.

Holders Hungary appear to have avoided the tougher-looking of the two groups of six teams, who will each play each other in a mini league system to decide which teams will progress to the quarterfinals.

Croatia are partnered with hosts China, Pan American Games holders, USA, 2007 World League winners Serbia, and Italy and Germany.

Hungary will line up against Spain, who came third in the World Championships, Oceania group winners, Australia, Canada, Greece and Montenegro, who won the European Water Polo Qualification Tournament.

In women’s competition, defending 2004 Athens champions Italy meet China, Pan American Games’ winners USA, and Russia.

The second women’s group sees The Netherlands, Australia, Hungary and Greece face each other.

The men’s and women’s matches will take place on alternate days. After the preliminary group games the men’s competition will go to quarterfinals, semifinals, and a final, while the women’s event goes straight to semifinals and a final.

The Beijing 2008 Water Polo competition will be held from August 10 – 24 and will take place at Beijing’s Ying Tung Pool.
