Thiago Monteiro crowned champion at Ramadan Games in Abu Dhabi

Brazil’s Thiago Monteiro won the table tennis event, staged at the 11th Ramadan Games in Abu Dhabi on Saturday 6th October 2007.
It was the second time that table tennis had been organised in the multi sport competition and the tournament exceeded expectations with several players of international stature on duty.
Argentina’s Liu Song, China’s Li Yang, India’s Sharath Kamal Achanta, Egypt’s El-Sayed Lashin and the eventual champion, Brazil’s Thiago Monteiro, were all on duty.
Closely Fought
The competition was staged on a group basis with the vital matches being closely fought duels.
Thiago Monteiro beat both Sharath Kamal Achanta and Liu Song in close five game matches to secure gold; Sharath Kamal Achanta finished in second place with El-Sayed Lashin third. He beat Liu Song in straight games to secure the bronze medal place.
Places
Liu Song finished fourth with Li Yang fifth and Rashid Abdelhamid from the United Arab Emirates sixth.
Seventh place went to Ibrahim Al-Hassan of Kuwait with Cedric Cabestany of France eighth, Egypt’s Ahmed Ali-Saleh ninth and Saudi Arabia’s Abdulaziz Al-Abbad tenth.
