(BEIJING, August 15) — Men’s Singles World No. 1 Lin Dan of China beat his compatriot,fourth-seeded Chen Jin 21-12, 21-18 in the semifinals of the Olympic Badminton tournament on Friday, August 15.
Earlier the same day, Malaysia’s World No. 2 Lee Chong-wei knocked out Lee Hyun-il of the Republic of Korea to advance to the finals.
Lin took it home in two straight games to prevail over Chen, but not without a fight. Cruising to a 16-9 lead midway through and closing the first game 21-12, Lin trailed 15-14 in the second game before scoring five points in a row to extend his lead and hold off Chen 21-18.
“In the second game I made several errors. I played very hastily.” said Chen, referring to his loss.
“I was very happy to get into the Olympic Games and even more happy to be among the top four players,” he added, saying he hopes teammate Lin Dan will “win the gold medal in the next match.”
Though heavily favored for gold, Lin does not underestimate his competition. “In the Thomas Cup I lost to Lee (Chong-wei) and I think he is the best in the Men’s Singles so far.”
The final showdown between Lin and Lee will take place at 8:48 p.m. (UTC/GMT
on August 17 at the Beijing University of Technology Gymnasium.
