Ronaldinho desires Olympic glory

Updated: 2008-06-24

(BEIJING, June 24) — Brazilian footballer Ronaldinho has expressed his desire to play at the Beijing Olympic Games.

The 28-year-old midfielder had a difficult season in the Spanish League with his club, Barcelona and has been out of action since March with an injured thigh.

“I miss the team and I hope to return as quickly as possible,” the two-time FIFA Player of the Year was quoted by FIFA.com.

Ronaldinho has never been short of glory in his career, but wants to add an Olympic gold medal to his list of achievements: “I really want to take part in the Olympic Games.” he said.

His countryman, Kaká, also expressed his wishes to play at Beijing 2008, but his Italian club AC Milan has officially refused to release him.

Updated: 2008-06-24

Despite his team’s great achievements Luis Aragonés will leave his post as Spanish national coach after the UEFA EURO 2008 tournament according to UEFA Euro 2008 official website.

Although the 69-year-old veteran has led the Spanish team into semifinals at Euro 2008, and they have been undefeated since October 2006, Aragonés announced his decision to stand down on Monday, even though there were calls to persuade him to carry on coaching.

“I told the (Spanish Football) Federation and announced to all of you in the media that I’m leaving, no matter how this tournament finishes,” he was quoted as saying on the UEFA Euro 2008 official website.

The veteran coach will not quit football completely after leaving the national side as he has admitted his intention to carry on coaching.

Brazilian women’s soccer captain will miss Beijing Olympics due to injury

Updated: 2008-06-24 From: Xinhuanet

BRASILIA, June 23 (Xinhua) — The captain of Brazilian women’s national soccer team, Aline Pellegrino, confirmed on Monday that she will be forced to sit out of the Beijing Olympics due to a knee injury.

Pellegrino, who twisted her right knee and tore a ligament last week in a match against the United States in South Korea, had hoped that the diagnosis would allow her to play in the Olympics. However, the team doctor claimed that her injury will not heal in time for her to play.

Brazil’s head coach Jorge Barcellos lamented the loss of Pellegrino, but said he believed that the team will be able to play at a high level even without their star fullback.

Pellegrino scored one of Brazil’s two goals against Ghana that led to their guaranteed spot in the Beijing Olympics.

She is currently in Brazil where she will undergo further exams and is expected to go through an surgery. The player will need an estimated six months to fully recover.

ING Cup brings Olympic football fever to Hong Kong

Updated: 2008-06-24 From: Xinhuanet

HONG KONG, June 24 (Xinhua) — The Olympic teams of the Netherlands, Cameroon, the United States and Cote d’Ivoire will all head to Hong Kong in late July to compete in the ING Cup, which will act as the teams’ final preparation for the men’s Olympic football tournament.

The ING Cup, hosted by the Hong Kong Football Association and organized by World Sport Group and KAM Sports International, features two matches at Hong Kong Stadium on July 30 followed by a further two games on August 2.

Chelsea’s Salomon Kalou (Cote d’Ivoire), Real Madrid’s Royston Drenthe (Netherlands), Benfica’s Freddy Adu (USA) and Arsenal’s Alexandre Song (Cameroon) are among the many young stars set to feature in the ING Cup. All squads for the men’s Olympic tournament, which will be held across five Chinese cities from August 6-23, are made up of under-23 players and up to three senior players.

“The Hong Kong Football Association is delighted to host this pre-Olympic event as it will give each of the four teams two competitive matches just days before they compete in China. It will help them acclimatise and get used to the conditions,” said Brian Leung, Chairman of the Hong Kong Football Association.

“Olympic fever is truly kicking in, so we expect great crowds at the Hong Kong Stadium on both days. The Netherlands, Cameroon, USA and Cote d’Ivoire will be among the strongest teams in China and feature many world-class players.”

The Dutch are one of the favorites for the Olympic crown. The Jong Oranje, who won back-to-back UEFA U-21 Championship titles in 2006 and 2007, boast a host of established stars including 21-year-old forwards Royston Drenthe of Real Madrid and Ryan Babel, Liverpool’s Young Player of the Season.

Foppe de Haan’s squad also includes Valencia’s Hedwiges Maduro and PSV Eindhoven’s Otman Bakkal.

Furthermore, Feyenoord’s Roy Makaay, whose exploits for Bayern Munich made him one of Europe’s most feared strikers, has been one of the senior players to feature in the Olympic team’s preparations.

Cameroon’s Indomitable Lions have a strong pedigree in the Olympics, having won gold at Sydney 2000. This year’s squad includes 20-year-old Alex Song, one of Arsene Wenger’s exciting young squad at Arsenal and the nephew of Rigobert Song, Cameroon’s most capped player.

Defenders Andre Bikey, whose impressive performances for Reading led to his inclusion in the senior squad for the African Cup of Nations, and Stephane Mbia of Stade Rennais in France are also among Coach Martin Mtoungou Mpile’s top players.

Freddy Adu, the American teenage phenom, is the best-known player in the USA Olympic side. The Ghana-born Adu, who represented the USA under-17s when only 13, joined the likes of Rui Costa and Nuno Gomes at legendary Portuguese club Benfica last August and the 19-year-old could prove one of the stars of the event in China.

Gabe Ferrari, born in the U.S. to a Brazilian mother and an Italian-American father, is another attacker to watch out for as the six-foot one-inch 19-year-old has been developing his career in Italy since signing for Serie A side Sampdoria in January 2007.

Jozy Altidore, 18, recently signed for Spain’s Villarreal from New York Red Bulls for a sum in the region of US $10 million, making him the most expensive signing in Major League Soccer history.

The USA squad also includes West Ham defender Jonathan Spector, formerly of Manchester United. Spector played in Hong Kong in 2006 when he starred for the Manchester United youth team in the HKFC Philips Lighting International Soccer Sevens.

Cote d’Ivoire’s best-known player is Kalou, who has made his name with Feyenoord and Chelsea, where the 22-year-old has played the last two seasons with Didier Drogba, his national-team captain.

The Young Elephants boast another top attacker in Yao Kouassi Gervais, or “Gervinho”, who plays in France’s top flight for Le Mans, one of Drogba’s former clubs.

The full schedule and ticket information will be announced at a press conference on July 2.

Italy referee to officiate Euro 2008 final

Updated: 2008-06-24 From: Xinhuanet

VIENNA, June 23 (Xinhua) — Italian referee Roberto Rosetti will officiate Sunday’s Euro 2008 final at Ernst Happel Stadium in Vienna, UEFA said on Monday.

Rosetti, a 40-year-old hospital manager from Turin, came out the final referee, as well as the first match’s referee of the tournament, after the team of his country being knocked out of the tournament.

Italy has suffered a quarterfinal exit on a 4-2 penalty shootout last Sunday after the score was deadlocked at 0-0 after 120 minutes.

The disappointing result, however, meant that Rosetti was eligible to handle the final, as only those whose teams are not taking part can referee.

“First of all, I’m a supporter of the national team as I have been since I was a little boy. The penalty shootout was a very emotional moment and not very nice for the team,” said Rosetti.

“But I was in the opposite situation two years ago when Italy went on to win the World Cup. Of course, it’s a great honor for me and a very important day in my life.

“I am a referee and so the final of the European Championship is a wonderful situation,” added Rosetti, who was a last-minute replacement at the 2006 World Cup in Germany and took charge of four matches including France’s 3-1 victory over Spain in the last 16.

Rosetti also officiated co-hosts Switzerland’s tournament opener against the Czech Republic on June 7, when the Swiss lost 1-0 in Group A.

The other two matches he refereed were Russia’s 1-0 victory against Greece and the second quarterfinal won on penalties by Turkey over Croatia after their thrilling game finished 1-1 after extra time.

Ronaldo aims to return to action in two weeks

Updated: 2008-06-23 From: Xinhuanet

BRASILIA, June 22 (Xinhua) — Brazilian star Ronaldo said on Sunday that he expects to return to action within two or three weeks.

The 31 year-old forward underwent surgery last February after re-injuring his left knee during a game with AC Milan.

“My knee is getting better,” said Ronaldo. “I am starting my physical therapy to strengthen my knee muscles and ligaments.

“I plan on beginning to jog in two to three weeks and I am optimistic. I may be able to return to the sport quicker than I thought. I need to be careful, but I am eager to play,” he added.

Ronaldo’s future at the Italian club is uncertain and there remains the possibility that he will return to his native city of Rio de Janeiro to play for his favorite team, Flamengo.

However, Ronaldo said it’s still too early to declare anything.
