ROK enters last eight after crushing Chinese Taipei

Updated: 2008-02-28 From: Xinhuanet

GUANGZHOU, China, Feb. 27 (Xinhua) — Asian powerhousethe Republic of Korea(ROK) entered the last eight on the heals of China, beating Chinese Taipei at the world table tennis championships Wednesday.

South Korea, which already scored a string of dominant wins over Poland, the Czech Republic and Sweden, dispatched its top player Ryu Seung Min to confront 14-ranked Chuan Chi-Yuan in the opening game.

The encounter proved to be nail-biting with Chuan overpowering Olympic champion Ryu 3-2 in a long march.

Joo Se Hyuk, who made his name as a top-class defensive chopper in 2003, stretched full against 36-ranked Chiang Peng-Lung before emerging with a 3-1 victory. Joo’s compatriot LEE Jung Woo enlarged ROK’s lead to 2-1 after beating Chiang Hung-Chieh 3-0.

Back on court, Ryu pulled himself together and completed a 3-1 win for his team after finishing off Chiang 3-1.

“I did not warm up fully, which led to my defeat in the opening game,” said Ryu after the match, addin

All Olympic sports are sexy. (Well, maybe not the shot put.) Highly toned bodies testing their physical limits? As Paris Hilton says, that’s hot.

But even by those standards, women’s beach volleyball is in a class by itself. Sun, sand, skimpy uniforms, dancers in bikinis.

The Chinese women are a force to be reckoned with in beach volleyball. Two of their pairs played each other in the semifinals.

But the party attitude that goes with the game? Let’s just say the Australian version at Sydney’s Bondi Beach retains the Olympic gold medal, with Athens keeping the silver.

The dancers here are trying, but they are more American Bandstand than Showgirls. In their defense, one number they had

American Tunnicliffe takes gold in Laser

QINGDAO, China (Ticker)—Anna Tunnicliffe felt that the format of the United States selection trials played a huge role in her gold medal triumph in the Laser Radial class at the Olympic sailing regatta on Tuesday.

The 25-year-old entered the medal race in Qingdao seven points clear of Gintare Volungeviciute and cemented her triumph by finishing second behind the Lithuanian on the water with China’s Xu Lijia coming in third to secure bronze.

Tunnicliffe, the world No. 2 Laser Radial sailor, qualified for the American team by beating out Paige Railey in the trials and credited the selection system for helping her to the top of the podium in China.

“A lot of people say that it’s a bit of an outdated system but I think it was the best preparation that I could have had for this event,” said the native of England, who moved to the U.S. at the age of 12.

“It’s a winner-take-all event just like this one and I think that the stress that was put on me, the length of the event and the competition that I had from Paige, one of the best sailors in the fleet, was valuable and the best preparation that I could have had.”

There was a touch of ruthlessness in the men’s Laser class as Paul Goodison made up for the disappointment of missing out on a medal four years ago by giving Great Britain its third gold of the regatta.

Goodison entered the medal race with a considerable lead in the Laser standings and ruthlessly covered Sweden’s Rasmus Myrgren, the only man who could have denied him the gold, to confirm his triumph.

Finishing ninth gave the Brit the gold but meant that Myrgren, who finished 10th and last, dropped from second to sixth in the standings, denying him a medal and elevating Slovenia’s Vasilij Zbogar to the silver and Italy’s Diego Romero to the bronze.

“I think that definitely did make me stronger,” said Goodison to PA SportsTicker of his heartbreak in Athens.

“Just the fact that I came so close to a medal and missed out by one or two points may have been through being a little bit naïve and not quite tough enough. I think when the opportunity came today, I had to take it. You have to be so self-minded if you want to be a champion and you have to do what you have to do.&#
